Can you lose money with crypto-assets?

Yes — potentially all of it. Crypto-asset prices can fall sharply and quickly, platforms can fail or be hacked, and in many countries crypto-assets are not covered by deposit insurance or investor compensation schemes. Financial regulators such as the UK's Financial Conduct Authority warn consumers that they should be prepared to lose all the money they invest in crypto-assets.

What other risks should you know about?

  • Scams: fake platforms, impersonators and romance-investment fraud are common. See common crypto scams.
  • Custody: if you lose your keys, nobody can restore your funds.
  • Legal and tax: rules differ by country and change often.
  • Leverage: borrowing to trade multiplies losses.
